Fact Sheet
A New Angle
The Messenger spacecraft viewed portions of Mercury that had never before been seen at close range as it flew past the planet on October 6. That includes most of the surface depicted in the right half of this image, which was snapped from a distance of 10,600 miles (17,100 km) as Messenger sped away from the planet. It shows young craters (white dots), plus long "rays" of material ejected from the crater at top. [NASA/JHUAPL/CIW]
