Fact Sheet
First Glimpse
An early color picture from the Phoenix Mars lander shows a desolate landscape that resembles the icy tundra of Earth. Phoenix touched down on May 25 at a site near Mars' Arctic Circle. Although its pictures show no ice on the surface, mission scientists expect to find ice when the lander begins digging into the landscape in a few days. [NASA/JPL/Univ. Arizona]
