Fact Sheet
Volcanic Moon
Astronomers have located scores of extinct volcanoes on the Moon. Many of them are on the Aristarchus Plateau, a region surrounding Aristarchus crater (the bright circle at lower right). There are no known active volcanoes on the Moon today, although amateur and professional astronomers have seen flashes of light and patches of vapor on the Moon that may be associated with volcanic activity.
