Fact Sheet
Kidnapped?
Triton, the largest moon of the planet Neptune, appears to hover in front of the giant planet in this composite image. The Voyager 2 spacecraft snapped the two pictures in 1989. Triton's surface shows ridged "cantaloupe" terrain, along with streaks of dark ice deposited by geysers. News research indicates that Neptune may have captured Triton when it and a companion object flew close to the giant planet long ago. [Credit: NASA/JPL/USGS]
