Fact Sheet
Ring of Fire
Skywatchers across parts of Africa and Europe saw an annular solar eclipse on October 3, 2005. The Moon will pass directly between Earth and the Sun. However, the Moon is a little farther from Earth than average, so it won't completely cover the solar disk. Instead, a thin but bright "ring of fire" will encircle the lunar disk. The eclipse is not visible from the United States. [NOAA/SEC]
