Fact Sheet
The Odyssey Begins
Cliffs one kilometer tall, dark streaks caused by dust avalanches, and a large impact crater highlight this image of the Acheron Fossae region of Mars from 2001 Mars Odyssey. This visible-light image, released March 1, was one of the first snapped by the spacecraft, which entered orbit around Mars in October. The wide light-colored streak is a cliff face. The thin lines down the cliff probably were caused by cascades of powdery Martian dust.
