Fact Sheet
Hitting Bedrock
Exposed layers of bedrock highlight the area around the Opportunity rover, which landed inside a small crater on Mars late Saturday. The terrain at Opportunity's landing site, in Meridiani Planum, is quite different from that at the Spirit landing site in Gusev Crater. Much of the area around Opportunity is covered with dark dust, with few rocks visible in early images. The bedrock is of particular interest because it might show evidence of water in the distant past. [Credit: NASA/JPL/Cornell]
