Fact Sheet
Faint Rings
Portions of the rings of Uranus, the third-largest planet in the solar system, are visible above and below the planet's disk in this recent image from Hubble Space Telescope. The image was compiled from multiple exposures, with a short exposure time for the planet itself, and longer times to bring out details in the rings. Uranus is at opposition this week, so it is putting in its best showing of the year. Even so, the rings are visible only with long-exposure pictures. [NASA/ESA/and M.Showalter (SETI Institute)]
