The Galileo spacecraft will fly less than 100 miles above the surface of Callisto, Jupiter's second-largest moon, on Friday. In an earlier encounter, Galileo snapped this image of a sharp cliff that forms part of the Valhalla multi-ring structure. Scientists believe it formed when a large asteroid slammed into Callisto's icy surface early in the moon's history. Galileo should capture even sharper images of Callisto during this week's flyby.
