Fact Sheet
Cracked Moon
The cracked surface of Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter, suggests that an ocean of liquid water may lie beneath the icy crust. The darker brown regions in this false-color image may be areas where "dirty" water has bubbled to the surface fairly recently. The image was compiled from several images snapped by the Galileo spacecraft in 1996 and 1997. [NASA/JPL]
