Fact Sheet
Solar Burp
A giant burst of hot gas exploded from the surface of the Sun on Friday, as shown at upper right in this image from the orbiting Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. Sunspots show as bright spots near the Sun's equator, while the black box represents a dropout in data. The event will have little effect on Earth because it's aimed away from our planet. But big explosions late last year had a more direct impact on Earth. [Credit: NASA]
