Distant Beauty
The largest object that is visible to the unaided eye, the Andromeda galaxy, is one of the highlights of the autumn evening sky. It is about 2.5 million light-years away. To the eye alone, it looks like a tiny, fuzzy blob of light. The orbiting Galex observatory, however, saw it in great detail in this ultraviolet image. [Credit: NASA/Caltech]
