Fact Sheet
Mars
The plains of Mars glow bright orange in this recent image from Hubble Space Telescope -- the sharpest view of Mars ever obtained by an Earth-based telescope, which shows features as small as 10 miles across. HST snapped the picture on June 26, when Mars was just 43 million miles from Earth -- its closest approach since 1988. The ice caps are visible at the north and south poles, and thin clouds form white wisps. Big dust storms are visible at the top (around the ice cap) and at the extreme lower right.
