Jovian Spinners
Giant white storms whirl through Jupiter's atmosphere in this 1997 false-color image from the Galileo spacecraft. The storms at top left and top right formed in 1939, and each spanned several thousand miles. These storms, plus a third not shown in this image, merged in 1998 and 2000 to create a single white oval, which is still visible. The orange teardrop-shaped feature in this picture is another storm system that was interacting with the white ovals. [NASA/JPL]
