Fact Sheet
Cosmic Rainbows
One of the most powerful tools in modern astronomy is spectroscopy, in which light from an astronomical object is split into its individual wavelengths -- creating a rainbow of colors. Bright and dark lines in each "spectrum" reveal the object's temperature, motion, composition, and much more. The world's largest telescope devoted specifically to spectroscopy is the Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory.
