Pockets of gas mixed with fine particles of dust blast skyward from the polar ice cap of Mars in this artist's concept. Orbiting spacecraft have found evidence that such explosions may be common as the ice cap warms. Eventually, much of the ice cap will vaporize, thickening the Martian atmosphere. But each polar cap refreezes in winter. [Ron Miller/Arizona State]
