Fact Sheet
Target: Tempel
Craters, ridges, and other features highlight the surface of Comet Tempel 1, shown just 90 seconds before the Deep Impact probe slammed into its surface. The probe gouged a deep crater, blasting material into space in a bright cloud that scientists hope will reveal details about the comet's composition. Early analysis of the blast suggests that the comet's surface consists of "fluffy" ices, like snow, with denser material beneath. Analysis of readings from the Deep Impact flyby spacecraft over the next few days will reveal more about the comet's composition and structure. [NASA/JPL/UMD]
