Fact Sheet
....But Not a Drop to Drink
Running water may have carved the gullies in the wall of this small Martian crater, which was photographed by Mars Global Surveyor. Seeping through cracks in the ground, the water created muddy channels that formed pools at the bottom of the crater, which is about 4.4 miles (7 km) wide. Scientists say the water could have flowed as early as a few thousand years ago, or as recently as the last few years. Global Surveyor found evidence of recent flowing water at several sites on Mars.
