Fact Sheet
On the Edge
The Opportunity Mars rover stands on the edge of Endurance crater after arriving there in early May. The crater is the largest feature around the rover's landing site on Meridiani Planum. The crater walls show exposed rock beds that may be similar to those in the crater in which Opportunity landed, and which showed evidence of past water on Mars. Opportunity will probe around the edge of the crater for several days while scientists decide whether to have it roll into it. If Opportunity enters the crater, it might not be able to get back out, so it would end its extended mission inside Endurance. [Credit: NASA/JPL/Cornell]
