Fact Sheet
Adding Color
The first color image from the latest Mars mission, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, reveals craters, mountains, dunes, and many other features. This is a false-color image that combines visible and infrared light. It was transmitted to Earth in late March but was not released until April 7, after it was processed by the science team that operates the orbiter's cameras. MRO is refining its orbit and will begin full-time science operations in November. [Credit: NASA/JPL/Univ. Arizona]
