Fact Sheet
First Encounter, Part 2
Bands of light and dark material in the large crater at the top center of this image indicate that Saturn's moon Phoebe is a big ball of ice and rock coated with a layer of dark rock and soil, according to scientists with the Cassini mission. The unmanned Cassini spacecraft flew past Phoebe on June 11 en route to Saturn. It will enter orbit around Saturn on June 30. This image was shot from a distance of 8,314 miles (13,377 km). The smallest details visible in the picture are roughly the size of a football field. [NASA/JPL]
