Fact Sheet
Look! It's Halley's Comet!
The European Space Agency's Giotto probe snapped this close-range view of Comet Halley on March 13, 1986. The image shows "jets" of vaporizing gas streaming into space from the comet's icy surface. Giotto was one of five spacecraft to fly past Halley in early 1986, during the comet's most recent pass through the inner solar system. Halley won't return until 2061. [Credit: ESA/MPAE]
