Fact Sheet
Just Horsing Around
A cloud of cosmic dust forms a dark silhouette known as the Horsehead Nebula. The pink glow behind it is an even larger cloud of hydrogen gas, which is "energized" by nearby hot, young stars, causing the gas to glow like a fluorescent bulb. The Horsehead is about 1,400 light-years away. [ESO]
