Fact Sheet
End of an Era
After more than 15 years in orbit, the Mir space station disintegrated as it plunged into Earth's atmosphere last week over the southern Pacific. Despite problems in its later years, the Russian station was one of the most successful projects in space history; cosmonauts logged thousands of hours of experiments aboard Mir, and the Russian and American space agencies established a working relationship that carried forward to the International Space Station.
