Fact Sheet
Brilliant Discovery
A star blows itself to bits as a supernova in this artist's concept of Supernova 2006gy. Discovered last year with a small telescope at McDonald Observatory, the supernova was the most powerful yet seen. It may be the first example of a type of supernova that was predicted decades ago but never seen. [Melissa Weiss/CXC/NASA]
