Fact Sheet
Hot Times in the Milky Way
Hundreds of hot stars are bathed in the glow of multimillion-degree gas in this X-ray image of the central region of our Milky Way galaxy from the orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory. The image spans about 500 light-years. Blue indicates the most powerful X-rays, which are produced by the hottest objects. The black hole at the middle of the Milky Way is hidden inside the bright white blob at right center. [CREDIT: NASA/UMass/D. Wang et al.]
