Deep Freeze
Layers of frozen water and carbon dioxide pile up around the south pole of Mars in this map from the Mars Express spacecraft. Higher elevations, which mean deeper layers of ice, are shown in red, with lower altitudes in blue and purple. The deepest layers are several miles thick.
