Fact Sheet
Mingling Galaxies
Stars from two galaxies known together as Arp 87 are mingling with each other as the gravity of each galaxy pulls stars from the other. The interaction also is triggering the birth of new stars, as giant clouds of gas and dust are compressed. This recent image from Hubble Space Telescope also shows a third galaxy, which is unrelated to Arp 87, to the left of the interacting pair. [NASA/ESA/Hubble Heritage Team (STSCI/AURA)]
