Fact Sheet
Lunar Observatory
Apollo 16 astronaut Charles Duke stands behind the first telescope ever operated on the Moon. The ultraviolet camera studied the Milky Way, hot stars, and Earth's outer atmosphere. The camera was set up in April 1972, and operated for about three days. It was set up in the shadow of the lunar module, Orion, to keep it cool and block light from the Sun. [NASA]
