Fact Sheet
Building with Leftovers
Two small galaxies are forming in the "tail" of debris from the collision of two larger galaxies in this infrared image from the orbiting Spitzer Space Telescope. The galaxies are the small blue and red blobs near the center of the image. Other debris forms a red trail from upper left to lower right. The collision of the larger galaxies pulled out streamers of stars and gas that span hundreds of thousands of light-years. [Credit: NASA/JPL/S.J.U. Higdon (Cornell)]
