Fact Sheet
A Sketchy Comet
Astronaut Edward Gibson sketched these pictures of Comet Kohoutek on December 29, 1973, showing the view from aboard the orbiting Skylab space station. The comet was much fainter than anticipated, creating worldwide disappointment for casual skywatchers. But both the astronauts and unmanned spacecraft gained important data from Kohoutek. The astronauts gained an especially good view during a series of spacewalks 30 years ago this month.
