Fact Sheet
Torching Solar Systems
Disks of gas and dust encircle newborn stars in the Orion Nebula in these four views from Hubble Space Telescope. In some cases, such disks may give birth to planets. But ultraviolet energy from the most powerful star in the nebula acts like a blowtorch, blasting away the disks and preventing planet formation.
