Fact Sheet
Missed Approach
The Moon slips past the Apollo 13 Command Module after an explosion forced the crew to abandon plans to land. After the explosion, which happened 35 years ago, astronauts James Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert relied on their Lunar Module, Aquarius, as a lifeboat to get them home. This picture was shot from one of Aquarius' windows. With the round-the-clock efforts of ground controllers, Apollo 13 returned safely to Earth. [Credit: NASA]
