You Say Canali, I Say Canals
Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli began drawing this map of Mars 125 years ago this week. His detailed drawings showed long, thin lines that he called canali, meaning "channels." But others decided the features were artificial -- "canals" created by a dying race to bring water from the Martian poles to the deserts.
