Fact Sheet
Galactic Pileup
Four or more galaxies collide in this composite image from Hubble Space Telescope. The system, known as IRAS 19297-0406, is about one billion light-years from Earth. The cores of the colliding galaxies are coded yellow and bright blue in this false-color image, while the extended regions of the galaxies, which contain many hot, young stars, are darker blue. Astronomers combined data from Hubble's new visible-light and infrared instruments, installed in March, to produce this image, which was released last week. [Credit: NASA/NICMOS]
