Ready for the Moon
The Apollo 8 spacecraft sits atop its giant Saturn V booster the night before its December 21, 1968, launch to the Moon. Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders orbited the Moon for 20 hours. Their flight was the first manned lunar mission, and helped prepare for the first lunar landing just seven months later. [NASA]
