Fact Sheet
Dusty Skies
Bright tendrils of dust and gas warmed by several bright stars highlight this image of a portion of the famous Orion Nebula, a stellar nursery about 1,500 light-years from Earth. The bright stars at lower left form a group known as the Trapezium. These stars are much younger, hotter, brighter, and more massive than the Sun. The image is one of the first by the Wide Field Camera at the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) in Hawaii. The new camera has the largest field of view of any astronomical infrared camera in the world. [Credit: Joint Astronomy Centre]
