Fact Sheet
Galactic Jet Stream
A powerful streamer of subatomic particles blasts away from the center of the galaxy Centaurus A in this combined radio and X-ray image. The radio energy, observed by the Very Large Array, is displayed in red, while the X-rays, from the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, are in blue. The center of the galaxy is at lower right, and the streamer spans about 4,000 light-years. The particles in the streamer may be hurled from the galaxy's center by magnetic fields around a supermassive black hole. [Martin Hardcastle/NRAO/NASA]
