Fact Sheet
Cosmic Lagoon
The Lagoon Nebula is a giant stellar nursery that has given birth to hundreds of new stars. Yet the nebula still contains vast clouds of gas and dust, which glow red in this image from Kitt Peak National Observatory, that could form even more stars. The Lagoon spans several dozen light-years, and is about 5,000 light-years away. [NOAO/AURA/NSF]
