Fact Sheet
Creeping Forward
The Mars rover Spirit pauses in front of a small depression on its way to the Columbia Hills, which are visible on the horizon. The rover is still about a mile away from the hills, and will take several weeks to reach them. Both Spirit and its sister rover, Opportunity, have completed their primary missions and have been given five-month extensions to continue their explorations. Opportunity is nearing the rim of a large crater, which it will explore for several days or longer. [Credit: NASA/JPL]
