Fact Sheet
M82
Red filaments of ionized hydrogen gas shoot 10,000 light-years in each direction from the center of the galaxy M82, 12 million light-years from Earth. The bluish diagonal band is the galaxy’s disk of stars, imaged by the Subaru Telescope in February. Massive starbursts and supernova explosions at the center of M82 pump gas outward from the galaxy’s nucleus.
