Fact Sheet
Icy Lava Lamp
"Warm" ice bubbling to the surface like blobs in a lava lamp creates reddish patches on the icy surface of Jupiter's moon Europa. A deep ocean of liquid water may exist beneath Europa's ice crust, perhaps providing a home for living organisms. Scientists disagree about the thickness of the ice, although this image suggests that at least some spots may be relatively thin. Analysis of the red spots may reveal more details about the content of the ocean. NASA released the image, which combines two pictures from the Galileo spacecraft, last week. [NASA]
