'Shielding' the Sun
![](/images/gallery/h_Paint_Rock_10.jpg)
On the winter solstice, a dagger of sunlight slices across this elaborate shield glyph at Paint Rock, Texas, indicating that the site was a gathering place for solstice rituals. Site owner Kay Campbell discovered the Sun dagger on the solstice in 1996, and a Texas astronomer later confirmed the find.
